Welcome to Damolock Dexters web page
Welcome to Damolock Dexters. We breed about 10 to 15 animals a year so we sell about that many too. What is for sale is not always the calves though some calves each year are for sale. More often it is the proven trained Dexters that are for sale so if you are just beginning in Dexters that is a great place to start. There are a limited number of trained house cows and there is a waiting list for these but also a few girls that have potential if you have the skills to train them. As always we have some quality animals available for sale as we have to keep a close eye on our stocking numbers as we have only a small area of land.
Just a bit about us
My name is Gillian and I am the studmaster and along with my husband Colin have had Dexters here in Lake Clifton, Western Australia for over 29 years. We have been members of the DCAI (Dexter Cattle Australia Inc) since 1993. My interest was first sparked when I saw an article in a local paper about a couple importing a Dexter heifer to WA. I made some enquiries and found out that to import one myself would cost more than a new car but also found out there was another way to own a Dexter. It was called grading up and by using foundation cows and purebred Dexter semen in four generations of the female line you could have your own purebred. Well that's the theory, the truth is four generations of Dexter grade females could take more than ten years and did. The cow we started with was called Melita and she was from an purebred Angus sire and a Jersey mother, Gypsy, who was very small, black and had white horns with black tips. Sound familiar? She looked like a Dexter. It was said the Jersey dairy Gypsy came from had Dexters back in the 1930's and Melita actually met all the breed standards for a Dexter and was polled with a huge milk capacity. Our main interest at the time was self sufficiency and house cows. The more we learnt about Dexters the more we knew that they fitted our interests better than Jersey cows after all self sufficiency also meant meat as well as milk and Jerseys did not excel there.
Well after many male calves born and a few females we slowly advanced through the grades. Grade one (50% Dexter) then grade two (75% Dexter) grade three ( 87% Dexter) and finally a purebred Dexter. Along the way we got impatient and bought a couple of Purebreds that had come down a little bit in price by then so our herd is made up of those from graded up beginnings and fullblood stock.
Although Dexters are a horned breed most breeders choose to remove them for safety reasons so we have concentrated on developing a polled (born without the ability to grow horns) herd of Dexters relieving us and the calves from that unwelcome task of dehorning. We now have all three Dexter colours (black ,red and dun) though the majority are black and short and long leg girls, something for everyone!
We have found Dexters to be very people friendly and easy to handle but also cheeky and intelligent and are very pleased with our choice of breed. We train up a house cow a year for sale for someone to milk and also sell pets and steers, polled bulls, semen shares in polled bulls and quality polled and dehorned females. Dexter bulls are for sale also to mainstream cattle breeders for easy calving of heifers. Dexters are also friendly to permaculture principles because they are easier on the land, they are marketed as "eco-friendly cattle" and " beefy little milkers". We farm our cattle on mostly organic principles and health care is mostly preventative, natural and alternative. We pride ourselves in finding the Dexter that will fit your needs. Give us a ring sometime and come for a visit and pat a few Dexters and have a cuppa and a chat.
See our for sale page for what is available for sale at the moment but if you don't see something you want there ask us as we may have just the cow for you coming up for sale soon. Cheers Gillian.
