This is the most difficult time of the year for us on the type of land we have here in WA. We havent had a drop of rain for months even though Mandurah which is some 30 k's north of us had a decent fall mid January it somehow missed us. Our paddocks being sand are starting to break up and dust coats everything. Just walking over to feed the animals is like trudging along the beach, you need fourwheel drive! A song keeps playing in my head a country one, about pray for rain and its the talk of the town coming down, I wish. Once again they have forcast rain but so far nothing. Think I will wash the car. I know that even though there is no green in the paddocks as soon as it rains it will be like a miracle and in three days it will have a green blush all over. I have been looking at photos of our paddocks at break of season last year and looking at them now it is hard to believe that soon they will once again be green again. All the Dexters are being hand fed almost all their daily requirements of food so it keeps me busy keeping them happy and I am sure they are looking forward to break of season as much as I am. A few lucky ones that are in advanced pregnancy are on the lawn out front of the house so at least I don't have to mow it. Another plus with such a long dry break worm eggs won't survive so no need subject the cows and dung beetles to chemical treatments. Happy Easter everyone, keep safe G

Well a lot happened over Easter, firstly IT RAINED! starting April 1st half a ml then 3.5 the next day and 4.5 the next and 6.5 on the day before the Easter weekend. Then the sun came out and hey presto green blush all over. Now we are holding our breath for some follow up rain but are happy the rain has started off gently for break of season, not like two years ago, 77ml in 90 minutes and all our paddock ended up in next doors or piled up against the fence. Secondly one of our favourite cows was sold and picked up at Easter. She has gone to a good pet home in West Lancelin to live with a young Dun Dexter bull, a small pig, a Kelpie dog and any number of chooks and ducks. We call her Daisy but her pedigree name is Destiny and her birth story is in the document below. We have heard she is settling in well and enjoying pats from the Easter visitors. Thirdly I bought a new car, the first brand new car I have ever owned and it was delivered the Thursday night before Easter. The new car was needed because the new trailer I am having made for moving Dexters around is bigger than my old one and I needed greater towing capacity. Thats my story anyway but my last car I have had since 1997 so it was about time. We have sold six cattle this month but we still have some very good ones left to go and some coming up for sale as their calves are weaned and they are remated. If you are looking for something in particular just ask I can usually find something to suit your needs. Happy Dextering G |
