I can't believe that it is around a year since my last post. The summer was not too hard this year and at least we did not have any bushfires this year. Once again the miracle of Autumn has turned the paddocks all green. We have been busy piling waste wood together to clear up and burn, and the place looks nice and neat- until the next storm! Lately we have sent off some genetic tests to USA to determine which of our cattle are double polled and also testing for A2 milk. So far all of our cows that we have tested have come back A1/A2 which is low beta casein milk. Our polled red bull tested A2/A2 which is NO beta casein milk. All of this backs up the folk-law that says Dexter milk is better for your health and tolerated better by people who have a problem with shop bought milk. Together with the small fat globules in Dexter milk that make it behave like goats milk for cheese making and its high level of milk solids it is all round better for our health and wellbeing. Never mind that it also tastes great! We are waiting on a test that can prove the claim that Dexter meat is also low cholesterol. On the polled scene a reasonable amount or our cows have come back as double polled so we are well on track to have a herd of double polled Dexters that will have a polled calf no matter what they are mated to. Bye till next time, Gillian.
