All the calving for Autumn season is finished and we have 12 calves running about. The last one born to Caliesha a lovely girl we called Hyiesha born just 10 days after the storm and we so relieved she was not effected. They are all just starting to learn about electric fencing so we can graze them and their mothers out on the lawn areas. The grass is quite long now after a good rainy June, a very dry July and now an average August. We have sold some of the cattle but still have lots more to sell so thats my next job to update the for sale page as a couple of the heifers that are for sale are due to calve early October so need to go and get settled in their new homes as soon as possible. I also still have to develop the website for the promotion group so keep a watch out for that. Cheers Gillian.
Well long time without any blog comments and I must apologise that I have been unavailable. On June 10th we had a big storm and it was very destructive to the whole south west of Western Australia. Trees down everywhere! We had a mini tornado rip through our place shredding trees and tore straight over the house and headed through all our major paddocks exiting via the back gate and over the main road. Thankfully no damage to buildings or fixtures just lots of tree debris everywhere. We had just finished tidying up the paddocks two days earlier, we should have taken a photo as tidy did not last long. The last four hours of daylight that day were spent removing fallen branches off the boundry fences and restoring their integrity. We did not lose any whole trees but around the district many whole Tuart trees that are aged 400 yrs plus went over and some were so big their root mass almost reached the power lines. We were without power for three days and all mobile communication was out, the landline phone was the only thing working. Having the ability to generate our own power as well as a twelve volt emergency lighting system and gravity fed water, we were OK. In our district where we supply all our own water many rely on power to supply tank water and they had a tough time with no drinking, cooking, washing or flushing water. We are still cleaning up the mess, probably will take years but as it rots down it will add fertility to the soil. Anyway the communications tower that relays our internet went down in the storm and so far has not been restored. They are only a small cheap provider and suffered widespread damage to their network and are struggling I think. This week we have resorted to finding a temporary fill in provider for internet so at last I can edit my web page and catch up on all my emails. Up until now I had to drive 20kms to the local library to check emails. Fortunately as our emails are with Yahoo we still have the same email addresses.
